Known for its winding rivers, outdoor recreation, and rich history, the Alabama River Region offers so much for visitors. Whether just passing through or staying for an extended vacation, here’s a few of our favorite things to do in Alabama River Region. Of course, there’s lots of shopping and restaurants in the area, but this list focuses on natural and historical places.

Alabama Wildlife Federation – Alabama Nature Center

You can spend an entire day at the Alabama Nature Center. There are five miles of boardwalks and trails traversing forests, fields, streams, wetlands and ponds. It’s run by the Alabama Wildlife Federation (AWF) which is the oldest and largest non-profit conservation organization in Alabama.

The focus of the Alabama Nature Center is conservation education, resource stewardship and hunting and angling heritage. Many schools and groups in the area visit the center for field trips and education programs, but it’s not just for kids! Anyone who is interested in nature and conversation will enjoy the 350-acre planned use outdoor education facility.

According to alabamawildlife.org, “In addition to the self-guided trail system, you can also enjoy entertaining and informative conservation education programming during designated weekends. These weekends feature themes that highlight snakes, salamanders, frogs, turtles, birds, hydrangeas and even fishing, just to name a few. During these weekends, you can also enjoy a guided hike by one of ANC’s world class biologists.”

The Center is also host to numerous events throughout the year such as the Plants & Pollinators Festival and Christmas at the ANC.

Kayaking

Autuaga Creek is one of our favorite spots for kayaking and is just a few minutes drive from Kountry Air RV Park. It offers 13 miles of well-paced canoeing and kayaking with beautiful scenery and shade, which is important on hot days. The most popular trip is a 2 to 3-hour paddle that begins in downtown Prattville. This four-mile trip was established by the Autauga Creek Improvement Committee, whose mission is to provide a natural, scenic, and educational recreation experience through ecological conservation and preservation of quality public access to Autauga Creek Canoe Trail.

The trip begins at a park behind City Hall and ends at the Canoe Trail Park behind the animal shelter.

There are parts of Autauga Creek suitable for tubing too. According to Alabama Scenic River Trail, “If floating is more your speed, you can take the lazy creek in a tube to the wooden footbridge and walk your tubes back upstream along Prattville’s Creekwalk.”

Bring your own equipment or use one of the area outfitters.
